Llanganuco Valley is an area high in the Andes where there is located the two beautiful turquoises green/blue colored lakes of Chinancocha and Orconcocha These beautiful lakes lie between the northern flank of Huascaran and the southern flank of Huandoy, about 80 km/50 miles north of Huaraz.  From Huaraz we will drive north on the main road through the valley of Callejon de Huaylas (cah yea hone day why lass) to the small town of Yungay (une gay). There are great views of the nearby high Andean peaks including Peru's tallest mountain, Huascaran South (6768m/22,205ft) as well as other spiraling, white capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca coming into view. We continue or drive ascending higher on a dirt road passing small traditional Andean villages before we stop at the Huascaran National Park check-in point. After checking-in, we continue driving until we reach the starting point of the Maria Josefa trail.

Maria Josefa Trail

We start hiking up to first lake, Chinancocha 3850m/12,631ft for about 1.5 hours through areas of yellow, orange and red flowers. We arrive to Chinancocha Lake - there is a trail around part of the lake making for a good hike to reach Orconcocha, the smaller second lake. If you choose to continue hiking up past the second lake ascending higher up into the mountains you will be rewarded with great views of the snowcapped peaks. 8 Hours.
